The Region 6 War Room, located on the Whiteknights Park campus of the University of Reading in Reading, England, is a nuclear shelter dating back to the early Cold War era. It is part of a series of Regional War Rooms built in the 1950s to coordinate civil defense in the event of an attack, whether by conventional or atomic bombs.
During wartime, this facility would have served as the command center for the Regional Commissioner and their team, responsible for directing the strategic response to air raids across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Dorset, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, and the Isle of Wight.
The war room is a two-level, windowless structure with the upper level above ground, protected by substantial concrete walls, and the lower level below ground. Towers on the building house filtration equipment, and it was designed to withstand attacks similar to those seen in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.
Due to advancements like the hydrogen bomb and the concept of mutually assured destruction, the war room was deemed insufficiently secure and too small to accommodate the large staff required after a major nuclear strike.
