The Trow Pool water tower, constructed in 1909, had a specific purpose: to provide water to Bucknell village and the Manor estate. At that time, Major Hunloke, who held Bucknell Manor, likely initiated the construction to address the water needs of the local community and the estate.
For several decades, the water tower dutifully supplied water to Bucknell, playing a crucial role in meeting the water requirements of the village and the larger Manor estate. However, as technology and infrastructure progressed, the 1950s marked a significant shift. Mains water, likely referring to a centralised water supply system, reached Bucknell, rendering the water tower less essential for meeting the community's water needs.
The narrative then fast-forwards to the 1990s when the M40 motorway was constructed and opened in 1991. This major highway, a significant development in transportation infrastructure, was built through the parish where the water tower is located. Interestingly, the motorway's path brought it very close to the Trow Pool water tower.
As a result of this proximity to the motorway, the water tower took on a new role as a landmark for passing traffic. Its historical significance, coupled with its visible presence along a major transportation route, turned the Trow Pool water tower into a recognisable feature for those traveling on the M40. The transformation from a functional water supply structure to a landmark for motorway travelers reflects the evolution of infrastructure and its adaptation to changing societal needs over the years. The water tower, once a vital utility, now stands as a historical and visual point of reference in the landscape, connecting the past with the present in the context of local infrastructure and transportation development.
