Bath Abbey, officially the Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, stands as a significant religious and historical site in Bath, Somerset, England. This parish church of the Church of England and former Benedictine monastery has a rich history dating back to the 7th century, with extensive renovations in the 10th, 12th, and 16th centuries. A major restoration project overseen by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the 1860s brought the abbey to its present form. Bath Abbey is renowned for its imposing Perpendicular Gothic architecture, a prominent feature in the West Country.
Originally, this medieval abbey church also served as a cathedral for a time, but the diocesan seat was eventually moved to Wells Cathedral following disputes between church figures in Bath and Wells. In 1539, during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the Benedictine community disbanded.
Architecturally, the church is designed in a cruciform layout and can accommodate up to 1,200 worshipers. Beyond its role as a place of active worship, Bath Abbey also hosts various civic events, concerts, lectures, and houses a heritage museum within its cellars.
The abbey holds Grade I listing status, with its striking fan vaulting being a standout feature. It includes war memorials dedicated to the local community and commemorates notable individuals through wall and floor plaques and commemorative stained glass. Bath Abbey is equipped with two organs and a set of ten bells. Notably, the west front of the abbey showcases sculptures depicting angels ascending to heaven on stone ladders, symbolizing Jacob's Ladder.
